Tsakopoulos Hellenic Collection
Hellenic Research Fellowship Program 2024-2025
Thanks to generous funding from the Tarbell Family Foundation, the Gladys Krieble Delmas Foundation, and the Endowment Fund of the Greek Orthodox Church of the Annunciation of Sacramento, the University Library at California State University, Sacramento is pleased to offer the continuation of the Hellenic Research Fellowship Program (HRFP) for a 12th year. The HRFP, the only residential fellowship program west of the Mississippi in Hellenic studies broadly conceived, enables visiting scholars to conduct research using the Tsakopoulos Hellenic Collection in Sacramento, CA. This year we are happy to inaugurate writer-in-residence fellowships as an addition to the Program. The HRFP provides a limited number of fellowships in the form of reimbursement to help offset transportation and living expenses incurred in connection with the awards. The fellowship application deadline is May 3, 2024. No late applications will be considered. See below for full program information and application instructions.
Consisting of the holdings of the former Speros Basil Vryonis Center for the Study of Hellenism, the Tsakopoulos Hellenic Collection, part of the Donald & Beverly Gerth Special Collections and University Archives, is a research collection of international significance for the campus and Sacramento regional communities, as well as for scholars around the globe. Currently numbering over 80,000 volumes and 500 linear feet of personal papers and institutional archives, it comprises a large circulating book collection, journal holdings, electronic resources, non-print media, rare books, archival materials, art, and artifacts. With its focus on the Hellenic world, the collection contains materials from antiquity to the present across the social sciences and humanities relating to Greece, its neighboring countries, and the surrounding region. There is a broad representation of languages in the collection, with a rich assortment of primary source materials. ACADEMIC WORKSHOP ANNOUNCEMENT
Echoes of Civil War: Legacies of Internecine Conflicts - Ireland and Beyond
A one-day academic workshop being held in the Royal Irish Academy, 19 Dawson St, Dublin on Friday 26 April 2024.
Since ancient times civil wars have been recognised as uniquely tragic conflicts that leave particularly traumatic legacies. At a time in human history when internecine struggles are now acknowledged as by far the dominant form of warfare across the world, this one-day academic workshop will explore the complex inheritance of such conflicts in an Irish, European, and global context.
Individual papers will reflect various aspects of the social, political, and cultural impacts of these struggles across Ireland, Europe, Asia and Latin America.
A particular emphasis of this workshop is a comparative examination of the everyday ‘echoes’ of civil wars in order to assess the frequent commonality of these experiences across space and time.
Keynote speakers:
Professor Robert Gerwarth, School of History, University College Dublin (UCD); author of The Vanquished: Why the First World War Failed to End (2016).
Professor Judi Pettigrew, School of Allied Health, University of Limerick (UL); author of Maoists at the Hearth: Everyday Life in Nepal’s Civil War (2013).
This event is generously supported by the RIA’s ‘2023 Decade of Centenaries Bursary’ scheme.

The National WWII Museum invites applications for the “Faculty Summer Seminar in World War II History” to be held in New Orleans, Louisiana from June 23–29, 2024. This seminar is intended to develop the knowledge and understanding of World War II for active college or university faculty who wish to teach, advocate, or design history courses regarding this significant conflict. SEEKING TRANSCRIBERS
Project CHECO: The Air Force Experience in Vietnam" (https://airforcehistory.net) seeks to textually digitize a semi-curated collection of documents held at the Air Force archive. It also supports research into the correlation between demographics and crowdsourcing effectiveness.
The Air Force created Project CHECO (Contemporary Historical Examination of Current Operations) in 1962 to analyze issues of immediate concern to various echelons of the service. Over the course of fifteen years, authors completed more than 250 reports on topics that included special operations, conventional air operations, rules of engagement, training, air base defense, and many others. Arguably, the Project CHECO reports represent the single-most comprehensive collection of Air Force-produced documents detailing its activities in the Vietnam War. The vast majority of these have been declassified and approved for public release, and only the publicly-available studies are being used for this project.
For the volunteer, this is a trifecta of opportunities: A chance to learn about U.S. Air Force history in Southeast Asia from the perspective of the service itself; contribute to digital history through the textual digitization of a portion of the USAF archive (similar to efforts by NARA, LOC, and the Smithsonian); and, last but not least, help me gather data for my dissertation!
The process is simple:
1. Fill out a demographic form (individual identities will not be associated with performance)
2. Review some directions for the site.
3. Correct or transcribe a document from the Air Force archive.
4. Take a survey.

Joint Force Quarterly seeks history submissions for its “Recall” Section
Joint Force Quarterly, published by the National Defense University Press, is looking for articles of 2,500 - 5,000 words or less for its Recall section. Recall focuses on historical issues often of contemporary relevance to the joint force. JFQ is the Chairman's joint military and security studies journal designed to inform and educate national security professionals on joint and integrated operations; whole of government contributions to national security policy and strategy; homeland security; and developments in training and joint military education to better equip America's military and security apparatus to meet tomorrow's challenges while protecting freedom today.
