JOB SUMMARY:
This position is located at the Naval History and Heritage Command, Washington Navy Yard.
Through research, synthesis, and interpretation, the employee prepares naval history papers, monographs, and special studies, and responses to naval history inquiries. The incumbent works on historical studies independently or as part of a team, assists the branch head or a more senior historian in preparing monographs and special studies by researching topics as directed by the branch head, and performs similar functions in preparing replies to elaborate research requests, short papers, and other studies. The historian conducts oral history interviews, critically reviews historical manuscripts, and represents the command at conferences.
The historian performs developmental assignments that provide training in historical judgment and the experience to progress to perform historical studies independently. Through research, synthesis, and interpretation, assists more senior historians with major writing projects; prepares naval history studies that are narrow in scope and typically restricted to one clearly defined topic; responds to naval history inquiries; develops familiarity with oral history techniques, editing of historical documents, and the Naval History and Heritage Command's archival and library resources. May be given short-term assignments in the archives and library.

Responsibilities
Responsible for a growing, 11,000-object collection that represents the history of the 1st Infantry Division in the context of American military history. Collects, preserves, researches, interprets and manages artifacts and the collection. Oversees a military macro-artifact collection (tanks, artillery pieces, vehicles, vessels, aircraft), including an operating historic fleet. Recommends and implements collections policies and practices. Supervises the collections staff (4) and volunteers and interns. Publicizes and promotes the collection. Helps plan future exhibits, special events and capital projects. Works with Cantigny Park, other museums and the US Army. Provides for safety in the workplace.

Professor of Military History, Department of National Security and Strategy:
DUTIES: Develops, executes, assesses seminar-based educational program for senior US and international officers and government civilians culminating in award of Master of Strategic Studies degree. Teaches three core courses: Strategic Thinking, Theory of War and Strategy and National Security Policy and Strategy. Mentors students in development of critical professional competencies, including national-level policy and strategy analysis and development. Supervises student Strategy Research Projects. Develops, coordinates, and teaches educational programs related to history, to include electives; advises USAWC leadership, department chairman, and faculty in the use of history in the curriculum; coordinates and leads staff rides; represents USAWC at historical conferences; conducts research for publication. As required, provides strategic and operational expertise to national-level, Combatant Command, and other strategic and operational headquarters.
QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:
1. Must have an established record of superlative teaching at the graduate or Senior Service College levels.
2. Substantial preference will be given to candidates with an earned doctorate in military history or a related field.
3. Demonstrated expertise and experience in national security issues.
4. Ability to prepare, coordinate, supervise, teach and lecture on subjects relating to paragraph 3 above.
5. A record of active participation in professional outreach programs, and a record of publication in professional refereed journals are highly desirable.
6. Ability to construct, organize, coordinate, manage, and supervise graduate-level educational, research and outreach programs to increase the professional knowledge and competence of other faculty and students in military history.

FELLOWSHIP ANNOUNCEMENT
The Edward S. Miller Research Fellowship in Naval History.
The Naval War College Foundation intends to award one grant of $1,000 to the researcher with the greatest need and can make the optimum use of the research materials for naval history located in the Naval War College's Archives, Naval Historical Collection, Naval War College Museum, and Henry E. Eccles Library. Further information on the manuscript and archival collections and copies of the registers for specific collections are available on request from the Head, Naval Historical Collection. The recipient will be a Research Fellow in the Naval War College’s Maritime History Department, which will provide administrative support during the research visit. JOB ANNOUNCEMENT
U.S. Civil War Era.
The Department of History at West Virginia University is soliciting nominations and applications for the Eberly College Professorship in American Civil War Studies, to begin August 16, 2011. The appointment will be made at the full professor or advanced associate professor level. A sustained record of distinguished teaching and research is required. The department is particularly interested in senior or rapidly-rising mid-career scholars of national reputation and with research agendas capable of attracting graduate students and external funding. Teaching responsibilities will primarily encompass upper division and graduate courses in the area of specialization. The position entails significant service and leadership responsibilities and carries benefits commensurate with an endowed professorship at West Virginia University. The department welcomes letters of nomination.
