Distinguished Book Awards for 2012

Background: The Society for Military History is soliciting nominations for its annual Distinguished Book Awards. Established in 1933, the Society is devoted to stimulating and advancing the study of military history. Its membership (today more than 2,400) includes many of the most prominent scholars, soldiers, and citizens interested in military history. The Society encourages research and publication across the whole range of military history (ancient, medieval, and modern, including related popular culture studies). The Journal of Military History is published quarterly by the Society.

The Distinguished Book Awards: Books published during the three previous calendar years may be nominated. This year, books published in 2009, 2010, and 2011 are eligible. Works previously nominated for the Society’s book awards may be resubmitted provided they were published within the last three years. At the discretion of the Committee, nominated books will be considered for one or more of the following prize categories:

  • American Military History (works by single or multiple authors reflecting original research and original contributions to military history)
  • European or other Military History (works by single or multiple authors reflecting original research and original contributions to military history)
  • Reference Works
  • Biography and war memoirs

The committee makes its selections for awards by 1 March 2012. The awards will be given at the Society’s annual meeting in Arlington (Crystal City), Virginia, in May 2012. The author of each prize-winning book receives recognition at the Society’s annual Awards Luncheon, an award plaque, and a $500 prize.

A copy of each nominated book should be sent to each member of the awards committee, whose addresses are attached. No supplementary material is required. To be considered for the 2012 awards, the committee must receive books by 31 October 2011.

Sincerely,

Dr. Peter S. Kindsvatter
